RecommendFast Folk is the name of a New York based magazine that was big in the 80’s and 90’s. It came with a compilation CD with tracks from all the artists featured in the particular issue. When they stopped publishing in 1997 they donated all the music to Smithsonian. Smithsonian has begun working with the material and Fast Folk is the result of the hard work and determination of the people at the label. This is very big double disc set that documents a lot of folk history in the New York area. There are some very reputable folk artists included here as well as some lesser known ones. David Massengill, Lucy Kaplansky, Shawn Colvin, Christine Lavin, Suzanne Vega, Steve Forbert and Richard Schindell all have tracks contributed here. Fast Folk provides a great collection of acoustic folk music that closed out the last millenium and a document of some great singer/songwriters to surface. By drawing on the new wave and old guard of American folk music, Fast Folk has proven to be a significant chapter in folk history.
