This album has always been under-rated. The Stone Roses are still heard in British Music today! This album is essential in every way. I Wanna Be Adored is still one of the finest pieces to ever come out of England.

On the steps of a monumental guitar rock trend that would manage to ooze its way into the mainstream in less than two years, The Stone Roses debut LP gave us better hooks and licks than any Seattle grunge record that would surface a few years later.

Despite the modesty the band showed to the hyperbolic praise they were showered with, they were well aware of the brilliance in their album. Squire and Brown dismissed their older singles such as So Young as rubbish, and thats because they became one of the decades best songwriters, with better singles like Made Of Stone, Fools Gold, and their closer, I Am The Resurrection. But lets start from the top with I Wanna Be Adored. First some crazy psychedelic embellishments, then Manis bass line, followed by Squires dreamlike guitar riff, and topped of with Browns spider-web-thin vocals. That spacey feeling however is completely gone from most of the other songs on the album like Shoot You Down, or She Bangs The Drum which best outlines the bands growth as songwriters.

But its not just pretty melodies that make this such a timeless record, its the musicianship too. John Squires work on the album brought a new style of guitar playing to pop music, which I guess makes him the Tom Verlaine of the 90s.

If youre turned off by hype and perpetual NME best-of lists which put this album at #1, just forget that and give it a listen, because even almost 20 years after its release this Madchester classic still sounds fresh.
