The Raveonettes released their first CD in 2002, right in the midst of the garage rock revival craze. This Danish duo joined the hundreds of other bands trying to get noticed with their modernized take on the many musical genres of the past four decades. Lust, Lust, Lust is not only The Raveonettes best album, but also the first one on which they are able to distinguish themselves from this troupe of similar bands. They exchange the 1950s-influenced sweetness they displayed on their previous albums for a sharp, distortion-filled wall of sound. The opening track, Aly, Walk With Me, presents jagged guitar rhythms and a muffled drum beat followed by a Velvet Underground-esque show of guitar noise. This song alone demonstrates that The Raveonettes have modernized their sound. They still maintain notable influences from the 60s and 80s, including obvious similarities to The Jesus and Mary Chain. However, their music feels more experimental. The distortion, reverb, and echoing vocals add an intriguing and subtle edge to each song. Lust, Lust, Lust may be The Raveonettes darkest and roughest album yet, but it is also their most enjoyable, albeit their most original. It seems that The Raveonettes are discovering their own unique sound, and so far it is working well.
