This anthology series has gone a long way to fill in the gaps for the casual listener as well as for the electronica/noise fan who may not be hip to just how far back the history of manipulated sound goes. This latest in the series tends to focus on variations of pulse, though there are some noisy bits, as well as the requisite Dada & Futurist homages. Here the pieces range from the 20’s (short poems by Dadist Raoul Hausmann and Russian poet/madman Vladimir Mayakovsky) to the present, with an emphasis on the 50’s & 60s. Highlights include pieces by Rogelio Sosa, Li Chin Sung, Leo Kupper, with Sosa’s “Vinylika” perhaps the most compelling of the entire 2CD set. More comtemporary and, maybe, more interesting to rock fans, are tracks by Pere Ubu, Ground Zero, Massona with Yamazaki Takushi, and Dub Taylor. For context, the set comes with a cool 50+ page booklet. Noise, found sounds, sonic collage: playing with tone and color has always been a part of modern music. Sometimes it has drifted in and influenced rock and jazz, other times it has kept to its won little, but expanding world. Sub Rosa’s “Anthology of Noise & Electronic Music” series helps shed new light on old explorers.
