This singer / songwriter comes to us from British Columbia (that’s in Canada for all you Americans). Eric Westbury has been playing in various Western Canadian roots bands for the past few years and Walking Tracks marks his first solo album. Eric sports a great roots voice that reminds me of Richard Buckner or Steve Earle and his songwriting has become quite proficient the last little while. He is able to write intelligent lyrics that fit right into his folk roots style. His voice is very rough and yet easy to decipher the lyrics while he is singing (some of you might be interested in the lyrics reprinted in the liner). Westbury remains acoustic for the entire album and mandolin’s, banjo’s and upright bass’ are included to fill out the sound on various tracks. Most are just Eric and his upside down guitar. He has the songwriting talent of the likes of Bob Dylan in which Eric is able to tell an entire story within a four-minute song. If you enjoy very introspective and thought provoking roots music, you will enjoy every song on Eric Westbury’s Walking Tracks.
