For their sixth record, The Bee Made Honey In The Lion's SkullEarth not only extends their sound, speeding it up just a tad with a bit of classic cock-rock and fusion riffs, they also tone their memorable drone into deeper, more echoing effects. They are also joined here by legendary guitarist Bill Frissell, who adds typically dirty and majestic tones to the set. His interplay with guitarist Dylan Carson is at times transcendent; “Engine of Ruin” and the two sections of “Omens And Portents” are among the best tracks in Earth’s catalogue. The rhythm section of bassist Don McGreevy and Adrienne Davies on drums fill the bottom with dark and solid matter, while keyboards—both piano and Hammond organ-- courtesy of Steve Moore add touches on gospel and helps add color to the drone, particularly on “Miami Morning Coming Down II (Shine).” The Bee Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull is a six song set that furthers the legend of Earth, while also showing the band is not even remotely running dry of ideas.
