I remember hearing Sour Times on the radio when Dummy was hot. Honestly, I turned it off every time and have yet to give them the second chance they deserve. Have you heard the new Portishead yet? It seems like it's been getting decent reviews.

to be honest i'm exactly the same when it comes to their other albums. a couple of tracks aside (only you, cowboys)they seem very contrived in comparison to this

Strangely enough I've never been able to get into Portishead. I do love the genre though. Tricky, Massive Attack, Lamb, Laika... But no Portishead. I just recently downloaded Dummy to give it another go. I'll let you know how it goes.

A friend of mine worked at island records and put me onto this band before this came out. I bought tickets for their first London gig in a small club on Regents Street (the club at the centre of the 60s Profumo Affair) and strolled in ready to while away an hour or so.

What i found in there was one of the best gigs ive ever been to. Standing 5ft away from an ever-smoking Beth Gibbons i was blown away by her vocals and lost in Geoff Barrow's beats and darkly brooding sinister John Barry samples.

This was probably the finest album to come out of Bristol during those smoke-fuelled Trip-hop days (possibly aside from Massive's Blue Lines). Immensly powerful considering how delicate and fragile the lyrics and vocals are.

Dim lighting and cigarettes are a prerequisite when listening to this little gem
