Tom Waits - Blood Money
Mr. Waits, the coolest of all folkies ever, has dropped not one, but two albums for his fans to scarf up. Blood Money is a loose adaptation of the play Woyzeck, which was written by Georg Buchner back in 1837. It's a dark play so it lends itself very easily to the adaptation by Tom Waits. He worked on Blood Money with Kathleen Brennan and dramatist Robert Wilson to get the appropriate effect and succeeds on all accounts. It is Tom Waits and Tom can do no wrong but you have to hear the brilliant compositions on Blood Money in order to fully appreciate where he is going. The music is actually elegant and stylish, if you can believe that from Waits, and very dark and carnival-like, of which Waits is so good at. He even fits in a track with a couple of star studded guest artists, the brilliant "God's Away On Business"? includes Stewart Copeland and the amazing harmonica of Charlie Musselwhite. The cleverly written "The Part You Throw Away" ("What did that old blonde gal say?/That's the part you throw away"?), is one of the many highlights here. Blood Money is a nice addition to any Tom Waits collection regardless of size.
