"Mission Control" is not a far cry from their first album, which in my opinion is a good thing. Bands like The Whigs should be slowly progressing, pushing their own boundaries at their own pace. You can expect the same riffs and mind infecting melodies on this one.
The difference is that The Whigs have used their success to propel their already solid sound. Parker is now a little more direct in what he's writing: "We got your money, now we'll make a new start." And deservedly so I should say. The first album was recorded in the drummer's frat house with equipment bought on eBay; which they sold afterwards, virtually recording the album for free. Dave Matthew's ATO distributed, and thus success was born. For Mission Control, they lost the bassist to MGMT, but they turned that into a good thing. In summation, Parker Gispert says that was okay, because although Hank is hard to replace, they had a bassist to match whatever style they felt the song should have. And if you listen, you can tell the difference in bass lines. "Like a Vibration" is very simple, roots bass. In contrast, "Hot Bed" almost has bass on lead.
I feel Mission Control is quality.
