Evangelicals are another one of those bands I never think of when people ask who I'm into. But I've loved everything this Oklahoma band has put out thus far. The Evening Descends is their latest offering and their first on the eclectic label Dead Oceans, a much better home for them than their former home Misra. The band does seem to have an identity crisis but that seems to be the thing to do these days. Be all over the map, try to avoid the pigeon hole. Think Flaming Lips or Animal Collective and the Evangelicals are in great company.
As usual with Evangelicals, Evening Descends took a couple listens for me to fall in love with but in love I am. The album opens with the beautiful title track. The instrument arrangement just seems perfect making this gentle song seem orchestral just before they go all Flaming Lips and weird in the latter half. A lot of Evangelicals music could be classified as whimsical. That includes the second track, "Midnight Vignette". "Skeleton Man" is just a great pop song with some great melodies leading you through. This song is a great introduction to this band. Tracks like "Party Crashin'" are what give them the comparisons to The Flaming Lips. With "Snowflakes" you might argue that the guys are working on a twisted country style. It turns out to be a wonderful and mellow song with dark edges creeping in. One of the best tracks of the set happens to be the louder "How Do You Sleep?". And then the most twisted song is "Bellawood".
Evening Descends is another great chapter in this under-appreciated Okie band. Evangelicals deserve much more credit than they get. Check this album out if you like The Flaming Lips or even Wolf Parade for that matter.
