The Coma's provide another pleasant surprise for me. A band I have never heard of, blowing me away. Not only do they write great mope-rock songs but their instrumentation is inventive and very fitting for each one of the songs. Even, at times, it reaches an orchestral level like, for example, the opening track "Arena". Production was done by Brian Paulson (Wilco, Superchunk, Slint, Son Volt) who provides fantastic insight into the bands almost shoegazer style. Shoegazer may not be the right term because it's a here and now version, not dated at all. The only track that's really an exception is "Wicked Elm" which wouldn't sound out of place on a Dandy Warhols cd. The word 'somnambulistic' kept surfacing so I searched for a meaning; Sleepwalking. That does a good job of summing up their sound. The band has a male / female vocal share that lends to the diversity that they have; Yo La Tengo fashion. Great cover and cool layout help to make this package one of my current faves. As slowcore starts to make it's move watch for The Comas to lead the way.
