Los Femurs are a punky acoustic duo that play energetic, smart to smart-ass tunes about love, vitamins, detergent and aging rock stars. You either dig their cheekiness or it will piss you off, but, like Violent Femmes or They Might Be Giants, you can’t deny the hooks. Modern Mexico, a combination of their first two EPs, is riff-rich and rhythm proud. Rob and Colin Femur alternate on drums and guitar, and the tunes range from straight-on rockers “Vitamins” to more quirky fare, such as “Round and Round” and “Crazy Girl.” This kind of “we can rock hard if we want to and even write great lyrics, but it’s all a laugh and we are smart so we get all our jokes” music gets old fast. Stick with the EPs. Los Femurs have hooks and talent to spare, but like other bands in this self-consciously hip genre, sooner or later, the audience dwindles to those who are as annoying as the band, until no one cares.
