heir Name taken from a novel by Yukio Mishima, a writer who was no stranger to the sweet pain of Romanticism (and Sadism, ultra-nationalism, etc, by that is for another article), Decay of the Angel is a duo that mixes the bright and dreamy with enough metallic drones to keep this set as biting as it is fun. The exuberant prog rave-up is emphasized best by tracks like the opening untitled tune, which sounds like an outtake from the middle section of the Beatles’ “I Want You” jam, and by the equally riff-happy “The Magick of Darkness” and “To-Mega-Therion.” Where the dreamy drone comes in is on the Red Crayola-like “Dali’s Brain” and “Of Blood And Roses.” Further adding to the mix of this rich set, “Hymn to God,” “Angel Dust” and “ Inside” have an unsettling, but gorgeous freak-folk by way of Nirvana’s acoustic work , melodies that remain with you long after the last spin. Though as duo, Harry Dalrymple mostly plays bass, which leaves the groovy guitar work, powerful and hypnotic vocals and keys to the amazing Yuki Sakurai, who also wrote the lyrics. This debut on Chuck Dukowski’s daring label is full of wonders and surprises. By the end of this set, the truly attentive listeners may have some wonderful ideas of their own to work on.
