Most people relate Frank Black's "Black Francis" alter-reality with The Pixies. With the recent reunion of The Pixies, who better to bring back but Black Francis. That's just what we are treated to on Bluefinger, Black Francis without the Pixies. Apparently Frank was enamored with a Dutch punk rock man maned Herman Brood and this is his tribute to Herman. So as expected this is slightly different that some of Frank Black's recent solo albums or one's with The Catholics.
The album kicks off with a fiery opener called "Captain Pasty". It just makes you feel like Francis is revisiting his youth once again. But really it's the rowdy "Threshold Apprehension" that you understand why Frank Black chose to release this album under his old Black Francis name. "Lolita" was lacklustre. Upon first listen you might just think "Angels Come To Comfort You" as another FB and the Catholics song but it has a tongue in check feel to it that only Francis could deliver. I wouldn't be surprised if Francis wanted these songs to become the "new Pixies" album. With the Catholics, Frank like to just rock out. With Bluefinger it seems that Frank is working on the experimentation a little more once again and it is a welcome return. Sure, the album starts out much stronger than it ends but it is still a decent album.
Pixies fans need to line up to get this. Frank Black fans will welcome the return to form. Bluefinger is a lovely, weird album that it appears has been in Frank Black's mind for quite some time.
