I can't say that I am a Dillinger Escape Plan fan. That's not due to dislike, it's due to non-exposure. I've only heard their EP they did with Mike Patton (which obviously had an influence on this album). But after hearing Ire Works, their latest full length, I think you could call me a fan. This is awesome material here.

The album opens up with an in-your-face ripper called "Lurch". If you make it through this song then you are ready for the ride ahead. The real fun starts on "Black Bubblegum", one where Mr. Patton influences the band. The song ends up actually being groovy and soulful. You could even classify this one as hard rock as opposed to metal. Then "Sick On Sunday" they use some clever computer like effects creating a wonderful backdrop for a noisy fucker. They don't want you thinking they've softened up so they hit you hard with "Nong Eye Gong" and follow it up quickly with "When Acting As A Wave". What's cool about the latter is the why they make it seem like the digital recording is messing up but it's in time.

They go and mess up your perception all to hell on the closing track "Mouth Of Ghosts". The band goes for a tribal beat and some clever musicianship proving that Dillinger Escape Plan isn't all about pummeling you constantly.

Ire Works is a must for any fan of hard rock/metal/hardcore. I think the audience for this album is far an wide. Check it out!

Similar to you Dennis, I didn't have much background on this band before getting this record. But after reading the Guitar World article on the band, I decided to pick up the album. I was expecting some pretty hard stuff... but damn! This is very intense and chaotic stuff, but it's still incredibly catchy and compositionally impressive. Songs like "Fix Your Face" and "Horse Hunter" keep your heart pumping and your jaw on the floor. These guys are quite good musicians especially at the tempos and time signatures they're playing in. My personal favorite off the album is "Milk Lizard". The fantastic bridge/outro always sends a chill down my spine, a sure sign of an unforgettable song.

Just a note:

I saw DEP live and their singer is HUGE. At the 930 club he climbed onto the balcony from the stage and stood right in front of my brother (who is a sizeable guy) and my brother looked like a dwarf.

Impressive, but there is something missing. Whether it's the nature of the beast or the lack of real teeth is hard to tell. It's either the band's desire to reach further into the mainstream or their desire to slack off on songwriting, rehashing old ideas more than a little. But does it really matter? DEP are one of today's premier metal bands, and for good reason. Their technical chops are second to none, their riffs an immaculate swirl of never-ending chaos and melody hidden within. The percussion is tighter than ever. I also love the new(ish) vocalist as compared to their old one, but it would be nice to hear Patton lend his skills to every DEP offering. In a perfect world, eh? Shortening up some of these songs has benefited DEP; whereas on "Miss Machine" they pushed some songs a little too far. This is definitely a solid album, with cracks that don't bode well for their future. I think covering Timberlake on that digital EP they released influenced some of these tracks; take a long listen to "Black Bubblegum" and tell me it's not true. Want more groove in your math metal? Here's your song. And your album. In the overall discog, Ire Works ranks ahead of Miss Machine, but behind everything else.
