All the glory that is Skullflower can be summed up in the track “Rotten Sun Larks Tongues”: glorious feedback courtesy of guitarist Matthew Bower, brutally distorted bass and drums from the rhythm section of Stuart Dennison and Anthony DiFranco. That just about distills the power that the band brings to the table, and “IIIrd Gatekeeper” keeps up the pummeling. Epic droning noise beasts abound here, with “Can You Feel It?,” “Center Puss” and “Godzilla” standing out from the others only through the sheer force of their attack. All of this record is gravy, as is any Skullflower release; the band is one of the most consistently adventurous grind-monsters.“IIIrd Gatekeeper” was originally released in 1992, and this reissue shows that it has lost none of its power. Given a fresh reading, this record sounds like it could have been made yesterday, or tomorrow. Skullflower are the masters of their domain, and no band that has followed them in the harsh drone has been able to improve on them or outdo them in terms of power and vision.
