On Tessuti, experimental improv guitarist Paulo Angeli mixes original pieces with choice covers of tunes by Fred Frith and Bjork. Choosing to focus on the work of two such different artists is, as you listen to his versions, not as incongruous as you might think. Angeli is aiming for the emotional similarities between the artists, and he finds that emotional core more often than not. The daring of both Frith and Bjork has centered on their working inside traditional roles, and turning them inside out. Bjork has elevated the pop song in ways few have since____, and while Frith’s output has gotten considerably experimental, he is still has explored new space through rock guitar. Angeli digs deep into that experimental passion, mixing with his own formidable skills in the same arena. His prepared guitar is filtered through fourteen real time outputs; his bowed and plucked style is perfect for sustaining the kind of endless echoes and loops created; on many of the songs it seems impossible that this is the work of one instrument.Aside from his own “La piñata de Piede,” Angeli is at his stunning best when adding his color and texture to Frith’s “Navajo” and “Ahead in the Sand,” and Bjork’s  often covered “Unravel” and “Hyper-Ballad.” These are literally spellbinding tracks, with a boldness of depth, emotion and experimentation that it is the core of the best art.
