You might catch yourself entering risky territory while listening to the great debut record Six, muttering words to yourself that something heavy, even profound, might be going on. But if you do find big statements like that coming out of your trap, you might not be wrong. 

Six features the kind of psych drone that is smart, self-aware, and aims effortlessly for the sublime. The trio of Wildidlife, lead by guitarist/vocalist Matthew Rogers, mixes Krautrock and other fuzzy nuggets into a stew of mythic, majestic ya-ya that ought to blow you away more often than not. What helps Wildidlife rise above other bands with similar agendas who end up filling their diapers with pretension is their humor and sense of the moment. Songs like “Things Will Grow,” “Feed,” Kross” and “Whooping Church” peak at the right moments, and hang back when gong forward would be a cliché. Credit the rhythm section of Andy Crane and Willy Nilz for that, as they slink in and out of silence and create space with stunning ease. Keep Wildidlife on your radar, and see them live if you can, where I bet they give the tracks on “Six” a workout that would make the world seem like a different place once the show is over.
