I hate reviews that describe bands by who they sound like, but damn, if a math rock Jane’s Addiction doesn’t describe Moros Eros, I can’t think of better one. That is to say, whining and jaded vocals over a jittery rhythm that is parts sinister glam and parts goofy and annoying.
That tightrope act works best on “Choices” and “Wake and Wait,” songs where the band manages an original mix of influences to show their stuff. Less successful are tracks like “Quit, You’re Being Thoughtless” and “Safety Net” which are derivative to the point where you guess that they knew it too by their choice of titles.
Also strong are “Highs and Lows” and the finale, “The View From Below,” where vocalist/guitarist Zach Tipton finds the right and righteous groove for both voice and axe and lets fly with his most believable work of the set. There is fun and hope on Jealous Me Was Killed By Curiousity that even the more calculated parts can’t extinguish. Don’t be surprised if Moros Eros' next release is a monster.
