Gutevolk is Hirono Nishiyama, and she sounds like a Bjork you can approach, a subdued Bjork that will not suddenly chew one of your limbs off on a whim. Gutevolk is sweet pop-folk that makes for easy listening, though not in a syrupy way. This record is just a nice pop record to play on a day when you just want to sit around and feel glad that you have nothing better to do but sit.
There are some elements of electronic and jazz here and there, but mostly the set of Tiny People Singing Over The Rainbow is driven by Nishiyama’s pleasant, comforting voice, which is childlike, but sharp in here minimalist observations. Songs such as “Portable Rain” and “This Moon Following Me” sound on first spin like nice ear candy that you will forget minutes after they end. But they stick with you, and repeated listens reveal layers of pop underneath pop that linger.
“Tiny people singing over the rainbow” is a confection bound to be in your regular rotation for awhile. Like the images its title suggests, this is a dreamy but fun distraction from the real world, but a soundtrack to take with you into it, just in case there is room during the tornado for celebrating.
