"V" Is For Vagina was sitting in my "to do" pile for a few weeks. Then I noticed it's presence on an Indie chart and my curiosity was aroused. It was then that I started checking in to Puscifer and was pushed over the edge when I found that Maynard James Keenan (Tool, A Perfect Circle) is involved and that this is his "solo" project.

So then we move into actually listening to Vagina. The album starts out with a sexy groove called "Queen B":

"Can I get a witness, Can I get a hell yeah"

Seriously, this track will have you wondering if Maynard is even involved. There is hardly a similarity to Tool or APC on this album. A nice aside from his regularly scheduling. Then "DoZo" hits and we get a dark song, almost Tindersticks-ish but with Keenan doing some rapping in a low monotone voice. "Vagina Mine" is another dark track and probably the closest you might get to Tool or APC, mostly with some of the guitar effects. "Momma Sed" gets going on a groove ladened trip again working on getting your feet moving. Again, Maynard is singing in a super baritone style that is hardly recognizable. I would have to say this is my favorite track with it's simple acoustic guitar riff and yet dance-able groove.

I didn't care for "The Undertaker". It just felt way to grinding for me, although it is possible it could grow on me. "Trekka", on the other hand is dark and has a lovely evil feel to it. On the last track, "Rev. 22:20 (Dry Martini Mix)" I get a huge The The feeling. Don't let this lead you astray though. This project is not similar to The The in any other way.

The industrial artist known as Lustmord is credited on 3 tracks. If you chill White Zombie over ice, you might have something resembling Puscifer. More a rhythmic experiment than a heavy metal project. Besides "The Undertaker" you would have a hard time convincing someone otherwise.

Puscifer gets a bonus 1/2 star for the creative album cover too. All cardboard, acting like a fold out safety handbook with some very twisted instructions. You have to see it to understand.

Man it is good to see someone enjoying this album. I was overly-excited about the release of this album having listened to the original version of "REV 22:20" from the Underworld soundtrack. I also knew previously that Maynard was involved as well as a someone who's helped Trent Reznor out in the studio (don't ask me the name because I've forgotten).

Got the album, the cover is definitely note-worthy in my opinion so I'll agree with you there. The music is sub-par at best in the grand scheme of Maynard's work. Maybe he just wanted to kick back and take it easy for once, but I almost regret buying it. I have to give it 5/10 just because it's Maynard and I respect the man but seriously.. come on Maynard.

It's definitely different. I know I threw Tool and APC over in the TIYL column but that's only because of Maynard. The sound itself is completely different. There was only really one song that might have indicated his involvement without know.

Its awesome to read this review, one of your best nachalant reviews this year.

I will find a way to get a hold of this album. I've only heard one single but it was unique enough to give more chances.
