High school bands bug me. Unless they have a miracle musician in their ranks, bands working for their high school diplomas are almost always power chord barters. Whether it’s just the influence of “typical” high school pop-punk music, or that music is just easier and catchier to play—young bands are almost exclusively purveyors of post-punk, punk, pop-punk, pseudo-emo…whatever you want to call it. Not these guys. While they aren’t in high school anymore (nearly all of them now pursuing college degrees instead), Anon, Good Nurse put those dollar-a-bushel power chord kiddies to shame. This is Explosions in the Sky, if the post-modern instrumental group had got their start in their latter high school years. While only their first release, Anon, Good Nurse’s self-titled EP doesn’t shy away from letting you know that this group of guys know what they’re doing with the proper instruments in their hands. Despite rough recording and a shaky start in “Youth of the Beast,” the Chicago band goes on to deliver nearly 30 minutes of atmospheric instrumentals in only three tracks. Not quite shoegaze (the sound is much too raw), but not wholly imitating groups like Explosions in the Sky, Anon, Good Nurse (taken from a dismissive “Romeo & Juliet” line) find a good niche. If nothing else though, this band deserves credit for releasing something so good so young in their musical careers. While countless other groups stick to easy riffs and pop-grounded gimmicks, these guys went for more, and have created something worthy of a spot next to All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone in your music library.
