This is the sixth release by Angels of Light, and though the others were mighty themselves, We Are Him is Michael Gira’s most poetic and harrowing record since the demise of Swans. That intensity has been tempered by the hard-won hope that has informed the Angels catalog, and that tension of the dark side of redemption is what makes this a classic set. This is a record that is as much about temptation as it is about wisdom.

“My brother’s Man” is a signature track in that vein, in which the list of crimes for which a brother is capable, the singer realizes his own potential. That and “Black River Song” recall the metallic drone of Swans; “This is not Here” and “Promise of Water” are more atmospheric in the typical Angels’ vein (the former a duet between Gira and his wife, Siobhan Duffy), and create a wall of seductive dread made more menacing by the wisdom of age.

Gira in his 20’s and 30’s explored the violence, physical and emotional, between lovers and strangers. Now in his 50’s, with added insight and also hope, he is still well aware of  the fragility of morality in the face of human interaction. Gorgeous tracks like “Sometimes I Dream I'm Hurting You” and “Sunflower's Here to Stay” could not have been written by Gira in the 80’s. But as Angels of Light, this artist who has dared explore himself more nakedly than most, now has more ammunition to deliver even deep truths.

I can't find this album anywhere, I'll have to purchase it. I got to hear "Everything Is Good Here / Please Come Home" by them, and it's quite a shift for Gira, from what I know of his musical past at least. Very good at the same time, just different. I suppose years and years of nihilism might cause such a drastic change in personality, and it is good to hear him as honest as he ever was, simply with a more positive outlook and themes.
