No sophomore jinx here. Black Cobra’s debut last year (Bestial) was a numbing and expansive set, as befitting former members of 16 and Acid King. Raw and sludgy with stoopid riffs, it was the metal record of the year. Feather and Stone, the follow-up and subject at hand, is equally a monster. Wonder what all this genius mayhem must sound like live? If you haven’t already seen them on YouTube, this release comes with videos of three tracks for your cowering and worshipping pleasure.

The disc itself is eight slabby tunes that lurch and lean in for the kill. The duo of Jason Landrian and Rafael Martinez love to build up a heavy drone and then pick it apart into huge riffs that make the statement in the middle of the tune. It is a signature sound, build on stoner rock but seeking more majestic cliffs from which to dive off. That risk is what makes “Feathers & Stone” a record that shows the band growing in sonic ideas, and Black cobra as a band that may be one of the five or six original bands out there, who test and stretch where they came from and create room for other voices. One spin of “Five Daggers” or “Red Tide” ought to do the trick to convince ya.
