Calla is not a new band although they are to me. They have had a couple of releases out already on Sub Rosa and Young God labels and Televise is their first for Arena Rock Recording Company. Their sound is very quiet with the soft croonings of Aurelio Valle. Calla is only made up of three core members. Rounding out the band is Wayne B. Magruder and Sean Donovan. The album begins with a track called “Strangler, which is the liveliest track on Televise. It lopes along at a wounded pace but as I stated, it is the album’s most upbeat track. On “Monument Calla uses a sort of muffled beat box to provide the backing rhythm. Aurelio starts his charming low octave singing with nothing more than the bass and the spooky rhythm. This song sets the pace for the rest of the album. Calla is mysterious and gentle in their deliver. Although I have never heard them, Calla’s other albums sound very similar to this one. Low-key, sometimes just creeping along, their sound is dark but promising, sort of like where the Cure was a around the time of Disintegration Street. Calla is a band that some will love but others won’t understand and cast it back.
