Inspired Ska never sounds old, no matter that its structure is among the tightest for any genre. Voodoo Glow Skulls have been at it for sixteen years, and were one of the first Southern Cal acts to make the style their own. They are still at the top; Southern California Street Music finds them skanking hard, and writing brave and straight out about the real people and the real, real fucked up political scene. The rage of “Morning Air Raid Siren” and “Say Hello To My Little Friend” are much needed in this age of pacified sheeple. The Brothers Casillas (Frank on vocals, Eddie on guitar, bassist Jorge) are joined by drummer Jerry O’Neil to form the backbone of the rhythm. The star horn section of Brodie Johnson on trumpet and sax-man Eric Fazzini blow hardcore riffs in front, with urgency, power and joy.
Especially hardcore are signature tracks like “While My City Sleeps” and “Fire in the Dancehall.” Returning after three years with a new slab of gritty ska and punk-funk, Voodoo Glow Skulls jump right back in with a bigness, “Southern California Street Music” being full of love for the street and the nation, and not afraid to stare either in the face.
