Another band from England with a penchant for tried and true Gang of Four sound. Sound familiar? That's what you get with The Young Knives but I found myself falling for these boys with their interesting quirks in tow. The band does have a lot in common with other current Brit bands like Franz Ferdinand, Maximo Park and Bloc Party sort of making them a disposable item in that regards but I found their debut, Voices of Animals and Men to be quite charming and listenable. I think it mostly due to the charisma of vocalist Henry Dartnell. The band does have a talent for harmonies as well.
A quick listen to my favorite track, "Weekends And Bleak Days (Hot Summer)", should give you a idea of what The Young Knives are capable of. Voices of Animals and Men opens strong with a powerful "Part Timer". You'll a lot of the references noted above in this song. The lead singer also has a bit of the Darkness falsetto on occasion. "The Decision" is a clever track as well with some fun pop elements working their way in. There's a bit of an Elvis Costello feel on "In The Pink". There a bit more power in "Mystic Energy" even with the different and more laid back vocals.
If you are indeed interested in British music then check out The Young Knives. There is no reason that this band should be as successful as the aforementioned bands.
