Wendy McNeill is a roots musician coming our way from Edmonton, AB Canada. Her music is simple and yet it feels so original at the same time.
The best thing about McNeill is her vocal phrasing. She makes out that she's got all these wonderful accents but I would guess that her voice is plain in person. The Wonder Show is Wendy's fifth album but first for Six Shooter Records. The next best thing is the wonderful story-telling that she is capable on songs such as "Where the living was wild". She mixes some Tom Waits-ian style with female vocals and great accordion playing. Look to "Nemesis" for an example. She even has a bit of a Tori Amos charm, if Tori sang with a southern twang, on "Treasure". You might even hear the soft, heart-felt "Beyond Longing" on AOR radio. But her style is best on the minimalist songs like "Absolute Beauty" where her vocals are almost all on their own. It shows you the charisma that Wendy has.
While Wendy may be new to Six Shooter Records and a lot of listeners it must be said that she is mature beyond her years. The Wonder Show is a great listen and something fresh in the roots genre. Watch this girl, she's going places with this great sound.
