Yes, many people think this is a full-fledged band but lo-and-behold The Russian Futurists are but one man: Matthew Adam Hart. Me, Myself and Rye is basically a collection of songs from Matthew's first three albums as The Russian Futurists making this a great starting point for anyone wanting in on this beautiful bedroom pop. So from a bedroom in Ontario to yours may I present The Russian Futurists.
The Russian Futurists is all about pop but the way Hart produces these songs they end up with a haunting feel to them. They are all feel-good but there almost seems like a filter or haze over the top of the song that results in the darker flavor. This all adds to the charm of the package. Take The Postal Service and put a long dark veil over it, that's what it sounds like.
This little compendium starts out with "Let's Get Ready To Crumble" from the same named album. This sets the tone and presents you with a typical sound from Matthew Hart. Then my favorite, "Paul Simon", hits the speakers. It is a fairly large song for being a bedroom recording. "Precious Metals" give me a huge Magnetic Fields comparison running through my head, something I'm sure Matthew hears a lot. Then we get "It's Not Really Cold When It Snows" which almost sounds like a lost 80s synth pop song. "Hurtin 4 Certain" is another fun track. I like the kitsch value of "2 Dots On A Map" although repeat listens might tire. "Still Life" sounds like it could be a Go! Team out-take.
Now for Russian Futurists fans there isn't anything new here. If Matthew had thought about it he should have offered up at least 2-3 new songs to get previous fans to dish out the cash for this compilation. Regardless, this should get his music into more hands.
