So why has Rod Piazza and his Mighty Flyers won the coveted W.C. Handy Blues Band of the Year award for both 1999 and 2000? Because they are hot! It wouldn’t be surprising if the crew were to win yet another Handy award for their new Beyond the Source album. If you haven’t heard Piazza & the Might Flyers you will be impressed by the sheer variety of blues that they play. They will kick into jump blues, lots of boogie tunes, shuffles, slower ballads, many originals and they will even pull off some instrumentals (“Reece’s Boogie). Rod is a great harpist and showcases his abilities on tracks like the slow moving “Ghosting. I know that I just received a pre-release copy but the production is in need of a bit of work. It is a bit fuzzy in places it shouldn’t be. This is no reflection of the playing at all. Piazza is sound his best here and this is as good as any place to begin listening to Piazza and the Mighty Flyers. Rod rocks and rolls as well as any other blues musician playing today.
