While one’s first reaction on listening to this set may be to think Nu-metal, that only covers the surface production. Oxnard’s own Warriors come out to play with their hardcore sympathies in tact; metal touches—especially by vocalist Marshall Licherwaldt—provide more crunch than commercial aspirations. Fast and furious, and sick of it all (ok that is a bad, punning nod to Lou Koller, who helps out on a few tracks), Warriors use a dual guitar attack to rage against the machine with power and wit.
As much as the two guitars bludgeon their dire messages home, drummer Matt Anderson does a great job with the frantic beat, keeping it solidly brutal amid the chaos, especially on the opener, “The Ruthless Sleep.” Guitarists Charlie Alvarez and Javier Zarate shine white-hot in particular on “New Sun Rising” and “Oduim Vice.”
Overall, while not groundbreaking, Genuine Sense of Outrage is genuine in your face hardcore that is sure to melt a few Ipods. Certainly this is a step up from their previous rocking, but cookie-cutter sets like “This is Hell.” “Genuine Sense of Outrage” points to a future of Cro-Mags type smart, angry frenzy. All this, and a guest vocal by Lemmy on “Price of Punishment” that is, of course, priceless.
