Everyone knows the talent that lies in Kelly Joe Phelps amazing guitar playing but with Sky Like A Broken Clock you get a glimpse at how on he some of his friends really are. You see, Broken Clock was recorded live off the floor with absolutely no overdubs. They had perfect takes or had to live with little mistakes or redid the entire track over again. Another thing to add to the mix is the Kelly Joe and his buddies actually did some pretty amazing improvising as well. Prior to this session, these guys had never played together and then they were thrown into the studio expected to do perfect takes live on the mic. Although quite mellow, Kelly Joe Phelps songs beg to be played loud. The reason behind this is the thought that has gone into the lyrics, let alone his mastery of the guitar. While there isn’t quite as much showcasing of Phelps’ slide guitar he’s still handling the guitar with grace and beauty. Kelly Joe focuses a little more on the actual songs than the playing here. All the songs were penned by him but they sound like classics the way they are presented here. Kelly Joe Phelps will indeed go down as one of the guitar masters of our time.
