Let me preface this by saying that I listened to this album at least 10 times in the 24 hours post-leak. When you mention Liars, you'll notice that people seem to automatically start dropping names of post-punk and no-wave bands of yesteryear. But, while managing to get these references you'll also notice that people tend to give them the credit that's due. Liars did their homework while creating their own sound. If you're expecting Drums Not Dead, think again. If you know Liars you won't be expecting anything reminiscent of their previous works in the first place. One thing this experimental band knows how to do is keep their fans guessing. Their self-titled album sounds just as open as their first two albums, but not nearly as sparse. They take their synth love from DND and mix it with the guitar and (not overly processed) drum heavy experimentation of their first two albums. One of the surprising things is that the longest track is 4:30. Liars manage to chant, rant, scream, pound and pulse their way through 11 tracks that flow together beautifully. On my first couple listens it felt disjointed but every listen since each track feels like it is needed in order to keep the album balanced and beautiful. I really don't understand how this album can go from having such a feeling of ecstasy to all of a sudden making you feeling paranoid, feel under attack. Welcome to my top 10 of 2007 Liars. Liars know how to fuck with your head. End of story. (thetestisover.blogspot.com includes a track-by-track review)
