Kinion mixes emo and psych with a little reggae, hip-hop and some off-center beats on this debut, which sounds fresh and fun. Despite their occasional dips into Alt-Radio-speak, the band contributes an ambitious set that rocks and will sound equally at home on MTV2 and in homes where that channel is ignored and/or ridiculed. “Zeppelin Full of Lead” and “Freedom” showcase a band whose sound has been informed and juiced by world music as well as homegrown New York scronk.

Check out “Pa Lalu Paya” for even deeper hints at the arsenal at hand in this band. For a power trio, they manage to sound big and funky, like Parliament in miniature, with Hendrix sitting in. Kinion already sound like veterans here, vets who have been open to all styles of music and willing to mix them together to see what happens. The result is a great summer driving record that, as Richard Pryor once said, is deep too
