Extra Golden - Hera Ma Nono
The continued collaboration between members Kenya’s Orchestra Extra Solar Africa and D.C.’s own Golden pays off again on this second releases, which is another hot stew of African benga and good old American guitar rock. The result blends gritty fretwork with horns and conga into tasty tunes about love, loss, and just plain old living it up. There are toasts to lovers ("Love Hijackers") lost relatives ("Jackolando") New Orleans ("Street Paradise") and even Barak Obama ("Obama"), who helped the band financially here and there. Who knew? Jagged but solid rhythms and that glorious six-string fuel a fun and joyful set that makes you think and feel at the same time. A worthy follow-up to their smoking debut, and hopefully a sign of more to come from this hook-up.
