I had to throw that Evanescence comparison over on the side. Reason? Evanescence fans need to check Within Temptation out. Seriously. This band has been cranking out the goth metal for a decade now with Evanescence owing a lot to them. Sharon den Adel leads the group with a wonderful voice for this brand of Gothic Metal.
The Heart of Everything marks a new signing for Roadrunner Records and should create a new fanbase for this veteran band. The album starts out amazingly strong with "The Howling", showing just what this group is capable of. They invite the vocals of Keith Caputo in for the second track, "What Have You Done", a great duet. "Frozen" drops back a notch or two and becomes a little more cinematic but still quite heavy. This track has everything to take Within Temptation to the masses.
There are some places where Within Temptation borders on cheese though. Like the piano driven "Forgiven" borders on female singer-songwriter AOR material. It's alright for that but metal fans will be wanting the more aggressive side of Within Temptation.
The Heart Of Everything has something for everyone. If you like female fronted bands, if you like gothic metal, if you like metal, if you like hard rock... Check out The Heart of Everything. I do believe that any of the above fans would really enjoy this album.
