Andrew Bird has proven himself not only with his Bowl of Fire project but as an auxilary member of the Squirrel Nut Zippers. On The Swimming Hour Andrew lays a bit off of the retro vibe of his Squirrel bretheren and concentrates on making some cool music. The album opens with the rollin track "Two Way Action" that chugs along like a steam engine with new member Nora O'Connor backing him up, and then Bird simple switches gears into a raunchy bump and grind track coyley titled "Core and Rind". "Why?" takes it's cues from the Zippers and provides a smokylounge type song. When the album got to "Case In Point" I had to check and make sure that it wasn't Thom Yorke singing. The track starts out with a tango feel courtesy of Andrew Bird's Violin and then he slids in with his vocals. My favorite track. Andrew Bird is a talented musician that can never be tied down by one musical genre.
