Minus Story have always been a band that I've almost fallen in love with. Their albums have been impressive but always seem to be missing something. Well, it would appear as if it was producer John Congleton (Explosions In The Sky, Polyphonic Spree) that was missing. My Ion Truss seems to have everything together and this band has put together the best album out of the five they've done.
My Ion Truss starts out with the vague "In Line" before they kick in with "Aaron", probably the most upbeat track these boys have ever done. It drops right out for the verse though and then picks up right after. Very forward thinking. But the charm really starts to kick in on "Stitch Me Up", starting out gently and then gradually increasing the intensity of the song. I always admire when bands can pull this sort of dynamic off and that's exactly what happens here. Depression seems to overcome on the sombre "Battles Of Our Lives". But remember what I said about "Aaron" being upbeat? Well the most aggressive song Minus Story have attempted is "Beast At My Side", a song that almost falls apart with sonics, distortion and chaos. It really is beautiful though. "Parachute" is quite gentle as well but strangely hypnotic and psychedelic. They choose to end My Ion Truss with a gentle track entitled "Miles and Miles", featuring a lovely piano line and some great harmonizing.
If you haven't heard of Minus Story yet, you need to check in with My Ion Truss. It's this year's definitive indie rock album.
