You know what's great about the Mountain Goats? They use hardly any instrumentation. This is a band that is more or less a duo (John Darnielle and Peter Hughes (Nothing Painted Blue, Diskothi-Q) but have been known to have a few more people partake in their musical mayhem. They were able to get producer Tony Doogan (The Delgados, Hefner, Mojave 3) to produce Tallahassee, a feat that I wouldn't imagine to be that hard. You see, John and Peter do most of their own recording and with their minimalist style there really wouldn't be that much to do. I could be mistaken but just my thoughts. The stories that Darnielle writes are witty and fun sometimes even from the point of view of various animals. The Mountain Goats are a group that is really refreshing in this day of over production and extreme instrumentation. Tallahassee is an album that will stand up 10 years down the road unlike some of the other material of today. In essence, this is a folk song collection and a very good one at that.
