This is happy music that makes you cry really. Blooming melodies of sweeping meadow-fields, combined with Let’s Go Sailing’s vocalist Shana Levy distant and haunting singing, are as sunny as the picturesque scenes on the album cover—yet it all feels unexplainably sad.  The Chaos In Order is an album for goodbyes, for transitions, and for turning your back on the way you’ve come so far. “Sideways” quietly opens the album in this fashion, painting a melodramatic picture with melodic instrumentals and bittersweet lyrics. The down-on-your knees pathetic pleas of “All I Want From You Is Love” are perfectly backed by a slick piano that casts the drama unfolding within the lyrics with a deceptively happy-go-lucky light. The Chaos In Order ironically works this way, again utilizing this effect in “We Get Along,” a poppy song about a sham of a relationship that exists out of pure face-value—thus sacrificing the narrator’s pride. But close your ears to the words and listen to the track, and it’s the happiest thing this side of Sunkist commercials. Beyond the age-old melody/lyrical clash, Let’s Go Sailing plays damn good music. “Heart Condition” testifies to this within the drool-worthy guitar solo (think a more acoustic Zwan). With “Come Home Safely” Let’s Go Sailing take on the sound of The Decemberists, a comparison perhaps that should have come along earlier due to the narrative-like style of songs within The Chaos In Order.  Let’s Go Sailing puts on a brilliantly happy face, both in their name, artwork, and melodies. But through their content and thought, they are deeper and darker—a delicious feature. The Chaos In Order is a soundtrack for the chaos in your life, times when you need to put on that happy face despite the tumult within. Best of all: Let’s Go Sailing takes all of the cliché out of that statement.
