I had never heard of Michael McDermott and for some unknown reason I really wanted to dislike this record. I have no idea why. Almost as if this guy had done evil things to me in a previous life. But as I listened to the album I realized that Michael indeed had merit and some talent too. It may be the overproduction on the album but once I was over that there was some great songwriting to behold. With lyrics like "There was love in her eyes / and murder on her lips" one cannot go wrong. I can see fans of the Wallflowers enjoying this (in fact Michael will be opening for the Wallflowers on a couple dates of their current tour) as well as Bruce Springsteen fans. He is most definitely a hard worker as he was originally on a major label but fell victim to a label closing it's doors and then chose to release an album on his own (Bourbon Blue). The execs at Koch heard the album and scooped him up right away and what you hear on this album is some reworked songs from Bourbon Blues as well as some fresh tracks. Don't fall victim like I did and greet Michael McDermott with open arms. His folk rock music is really accessible and he isn't going to let this chance fail him.
