The title Heavier Things is a good description of the album Mayer takes things in a slightly rockier, bluesier direction than Any Given Thursday. Dont take that the wrong way theres still more than a fair share of pop elements, and Mayer still comes off as a the introspective guy that makes women swoon.
Wheel is refreshing in its lyrical authenticity, its message being: youre not the first girl Ive loved, and Ill love others after you. Somethings Missing is also a good reflection on the sometimes-loneliness of life for both rock stars and regular people, even if we might debate how genuine it really is. Overall, all of the albums lyrics deal with some sort of struggle - there are no giddy Im-in-love moments. This album is the antithesis of gritty, but the effort is still appreciated.
Come Back to Bed is one of the few boring moments it begins with a bit more of a country-sounding guitar, and wouldve likely been more fun if Mayer had continued in that direction.
While John Mayer may be a bit hyped, its unfortunate how often people fail to recognize his very real guitar talent.
