8 great tracks, 8 big reasons why "Powerslave" is THE Iron Maiden album. As in, the best, the supreme, the high commander, the cham...you get it. "Aces High" opens on a fiery note, with it's punchy rhythms and soaring chorus. Fist-pounding stuff. "2 Minutes To Midnight" is just a classic metal song, solid riffs and a killer bridge. "Losfer Words (Big 'Orra) is one hell of a monster instrumental, solos fly and the band really stretches their chops technically. I've heard detractors claim the middle of this album falls flat, with tracks "Flash Of The Blade" through "Back In The Village", but all of these tracks are solid, if not as spectacular as the rest. If you put these on other less monumental Maiden albums, I guarantee they're looked at in a better light. The album closes in a pretty epic way, with the title track and "Rime Of The Ancient Mariner" altogether clocking in at close to 21 minutes. I always considered the band at their best when they spread out their ideas over such stretches, and both of these songs are big, powerful and complete with all the touches that made Maiden such a powerhouse at the time. This record belongs in every self-respecting metalheads collection, regardless of your feelings towards the band; it's just that vital.
