I seem to be listening to a lot of indie pop lately. Dappled Cities fits into that category quite nicely. Their music is quite grand but when it gets right down to it, it's not much more than pop music. This band from Sydney Australia have been at it for a few years back home but now with the deal from Dangerbird Records they are able to branch out into North America, Granddance being their first album to be released on these shores.
The nice thing with Dappled Cities is that they like diversity, as does this reviewer. The band doesn't full out "rock" but they get quite close. They have no problem slowing things down and experimenting a little either, "Watercourse". They seem to be cut from the same cloth that made Augie March as well. The bands have a lot of similarities but ultimately I find myself favoring Dappled Cities. The just seem to have a little more charisma and charm.
"Holy Chord" give us a taste of what to expect on the rest of the album. It's quirky with the swirling, lush noises that accompany the falsetto vocals but it sure sounds sweet. Then an organ-type sound brings us into the more direct "Work It Out", a little more straight ahead. I enjoyed the slightly darker "The Eve The Girl", yet another dimension of this Aussie band. The closing "Battleworn" didn't really agree with me though. It needed to have a minute or so cut off of it.
While Dappled Cities could fit into a British Pop category, they could also squeeze their way into an Elephant Six category with their whimsical arrangements. Granddance is a fun album that pop lovers should enjoy greatly.
