Protest the Hero’s Kezia starts out with an eerie silence that crescendos into a scream of “This should never be!”, and immediately bursts into relentless drums and pounding guitars. Skillwise, there is no band of Protest the Hero’s age (18 when they wrote Kezia) that is more talented. The two guitarists attack the album with layers on top of each other, shrieks and breakdowns, melding right into vocalist Rody Walker’s singing. The band pumps a dose of progressive into their metal, changing time signatures when least expected, and following a concept. Their concept is based around a girl named Kezia (go figure) who is a modern-day Jesus. The album follows her trials through the prison system, and her eventual execution. The last song, A Plateful of Our Dead, blows the metaphor of “beating a dead horse” out of proportion, to reveal the other character’s regret and hypocrisy.
