Ashen - No Other Comfort
This band began as an instrumental trio in 1996 and grew to such an extent that the need for a vocalist was imminent. The threesome then added a female vocalist (one of the best vocalists I have heard in quite some time) to fill out the Atlanta band. This is one of the strongest indie releases I have heard this year without support from any big indie label. Ashen use the shoegazer style of fuzzy guitars and great harmonics in their music but go even further than that to incorporate some of the better elements of Emo. They would feel right at home on Deep Elm or Desoto records. You will hear elements in their music that may sound familiar but somehow with Erin Akemi singing you are drawn right in and the melodic guitars hold your attention. For a small outfit too, they have a killer produced sound. This is a band that could end up with loads of college airplay with the great appeal. Imagine Julianna Hatfield singing for Sunny Day Real Estate and you are almost there. Ashen consists of great songwriting and even better musicianship. Be sure to check No Other Comfort out.
