Everybody knows what the music industry really needs right now and that is a new Gomez. Of course, given the current musical climate the act capable of this feat has to come from Sheffield, doesn’t it? The Tiny Dancers have it all; the summery nature, carefree accompaniments that incorporates a little ska kick and that slightly laboured, but upbeat vocal thrust, provided by the ebullient David Kay. ’20 to 9’ introduces this quaint quintet through a jungle drum-beat intro, before using the above-mentioned elements to hide dark feelings and a slightly sinister outlook on love that the lyrics expose. From the loved up trundling indie flit of ‘I Will Wait For You’ through the yearning tingle ‘Baby’, to the striking pop ballad of ‘Ashes and Diamonds’, Tiny Dancers do it with hearty spirit and colourful projection.
‘Bonfire of the Night’ provides a folk, campfire accompanying sing-a-long with handclapping a plenty for that neat joyful touch. Latest single, ‘Hannah We Know’ is the statue on top of the crisp foundation that this album sets in place. This is a tune that is destined for so much airplay this year and will provide some respite for those who just don’t get this Arctic Monkeys frenzy. It’s thoughtful and catchy verses are sung with soulfulness and belief by Kay and, is backed by a percussion promoted accompaniment to lead into the pleading chorus. ‘Hemsworth Hall’, broadens out vocally to cushion Kay’s cries with some lush, choral style femme backing. ‘Deep Water’ saves the biggest variety to the end, as a slow atmospheric build up of Arcade Fire proportions, helps work the number up to a spindling 80s cyber pop release. With Free School Milk, tiny could be the new big in no time.
