Joseph Arthur is a moody bastard and I’m guessing that’s what Peter Gabriel saw in him when he signed Joseph to his Realworld label. This signing marked a first for Realworld, first American to be signed and first actual rock act. Why did someone like Peter Gabriel make an exception with Arthur? You have to listen closely to this disc to find out. I have had this disc in my possession for well over a year and have only now discovered the charm that lies beneath the surface. When you listen for the first time you are presented with 12 very moody tracks, some more upbeat than other but the overall ambience is dark. I was the same way with Pete Yorn’s debut album. Upon closer listen you realize that Joseph has a sense of humor although dark. To get a sense of how dark Arthur can be, listen to “The Real You�. This is one of those albums you should never give up because it just gets stronger and stronger with more listens and ages well over time. T-Bone Burnett gets an applaud for the superb production as well.
