Conor Oberst is back with his proper follow-up to the pair of albums he released in 2005. Bright Eyes almost made household name with those albums but still the project could use a little more exposure. I don't think Cassadaga will be the album that will do it though. Oh, it's a fine album but I don't think it has the appeal that I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning had.
I found Cassadaga to be a bit of a boring listen at times. It just didn't have the dynamics that it's predecessors possessed. That's not to say there isn't some great songwriting on here, there is, but it seems very similar throughout the album. In fact, a track like "Hot Knives" makes me want to pick up my guitar and learn it. The arrangements are big and bold, especially on the previously mentioned track. Cassadaga might be a grower too, if given the time. "Four Winds" was released as an EP but included here as well. It's a good, easy going folk-ish story-telling song with some guts. But when you follow this up with a song like "If The Brakeman Turns My Way" a yawn ensues.
I enjoy the heavy lilt of "Soul Singer In A Session Band" but it too could have been cut down by a minute or so. "Classic Cars" is a nice track and probably one of the better ones out of the set.
It feels like Bright Eyes (Conor) is trying hard to be like a Bruce Springsteen or Bob Dylan but he doesn't succeed at this. It's his voice. It just isn't strong enough to even compare. Regardless, and undeniably Conor is a good songwriter. I think he just needs to work on trimming his songs down a little and adding a little more diversity. I know he has it, he just needs to use it.

if i really don't like something, i'm going to critique it accordingly. that's only fair to me, the listener.

to not like it is one thing to be overly critical and judemental of the artists effort and saying that it was uninspired is sadly unfair

well i humbly disagree. i\\\'ve been listening to Bright Eyes for a long time and feel that Conor and the band have more potential than what was given as a whole on Cassadaga. what can i say? just because i don\\\'t like it (finding some of the songs as boring and uninspired) doesn\\\'t mean my opinion is bullshit, it just means that it differs from yours. that\'s all.

the coat check song is the worst of the cd but it is still unique and make a plan and classic cars a in my opinion extremely good song and the execution is very good so i have no idea what u speak of. moreover make a plan is one of the more emotionally charged songs of the set and probably one the smoothest also......i humbly say that your statement is bullshit

\"Classic Cars,\" \"Make a Plan to Love Me,\" and the Coat Check song are all glaringly bad. It\'s not even so much about the lyrics as it is the execution of the songs; they seem spiritless to me, and I personally expected more.

im completely disagree with kev_Stev in everyway i dont know what songs you are referring to but some of connors best writing is on this album...just cause its different doesnt mean its bad. you just have to think about the lyrics instead of being so straight forward its called maturing

This an album where songs are either good or bad. There's no in between, and that's not necessarily a good thing. Some of Bright Eyes' weakest songs are on here, which even the brilliance of "No One Riots For Less" can salvage. This should have been an EP, or the crappy filler should've been on Bright Eyes' recent album of b-sides. Work harder, boys; this release just doesn't cut it.

This album is a lyrical masterpiece. Is it like the bright eyes of old....no. Conner Oberst has showed how he has matured. The lyrics are much more subversive. Simply put his writing has grown into something you will have to look deeper into and reflect upon. Such lyrics are evident in the entire album most notably in "Noone would riot for less" and "Make a Plan". The band as a whole has grown and matured they show in this album that arrangment of songs also plays a role in the quality of the album as a whole. For people who aren't eager for change they will be indifferent when it comes to Cassadaga, but for people who are eager to see Conner mature they will love this ablum and will have a new found respect. This album is amazing any fan of the band will love, yet it still differs enough from his previous works to be daring and shows his maturity. It is not "I'm Wide Awake It's Morning" but it has an place all its' own. Also Conner is not trying to be a Bob Dylan and Springsteen. He is smart enough to know his vocals and raw emotion in them are what sets him apart and makes people love him or hate him. Regaurdless of his voice he is one of the best song writers of his time and this was shown in Cassadaga. To say it is boring is something someone who does not appreciate growth and true lyrical maturity. Anyone who is a fan of Oberst knows exactly what he is trying to do and he did it. His daring and different album is any thing but boring and should not be compared to any of his previous work because it is a different style and much more mature. Take the lyrics for what they are and it will not be boring only a critical reviewer looking for something wrong in a masterpiece would call this boring. it is like a complaining about a mole on the finger of a super model. Cassadaga is amazing the writing is not repatative yet the only I can say bad is that the guitar and beats sound oddly familiar and common in about half of the songs.

(Hot Knives EP) Despite being mainly the brainchild of one man, Conor Oberst the number of personnel in Bright Eyes can reach 12 in number at live shows. For this second single from the flighty and explorative ‘Cassadaga’, O’berst hurries his vocals in a surge to communicate his forlorn state, helped along by a melee of chugging guitars. Calmness and composure is scattered around through a strong, ethereal backing element that includes none other than Z Berg (The Like) and the understated songstress Rachel Yamagata. A shuddering and emotive whirlpool suddenly builds up and Bright Eyes’ reputation for searching song-crafting seems reach another level.
For the theatrical B-side ‘If The Brakeman Turns My Way’, it is the clambering organ of core member, Nate Walcot that ties the number together. This strolls alongside the poetic cries of O’Berst to turn into a commanding and philosophical escape. Bright Eyes are truly burning at the moment.

I think that its a little harsh to call this album boring, though I think its understandable to say that some of the songs are lacking something. Still while there are one or two that I routinely skip when I'm listening, I think the rest of the songs are great; i play "four winds" on repeat. I just saw these songs performed live, and it was an awsome concert. But this album is very different from the others, and I can understand the springsteen comment even though I don't agree with it, because I think we'll get something completely different again the next time around.
