What began as just a little noise pop outfit from Chapel Hill North Carolina and wound up being at the top of the college charts until they called it a day. Icky Mettle is their proper debut and belongs in any indie music collection. Eric Bachman and his crew craft awesome and powerful pop songs and drown them in a sea of noise and feedback. If you happened to be in college or university in 1991 you will surely remember their semi-hit “Web In Front where you have to listen closely in order to pull the songs melody from the cacophony of guitars that swirl around. My favorite track is “Wrong with its chirping guitar and heartfelt vocals. Archers of Loaf hardly even needed to follow this album. They were pretty much alternative press darlings from Icky Mettle on. Check out Eric Bachman’s equally impressive although mellower project Crooked Fingers.
